Story:
In Monterey county, older and male teachers
need not apply for work as teachers. I am a returning teacher and after 4
years of substitute work I
ended up teaching at Salinas Valley State Prison as I could not get hired
despite my full credential (Calif. Multi-Subject Professional Clear) and
my CLAD certification. Problem? Too old (54) and male....
The prison teaching staff is primarily older
teachers who are now unwanted by
school districts....mostly men.
I am a returning teacher.......I taught
primary (k-3) elementary before I went into healthcare marketing...I
returned to teaching...went back to school to meet new credential
requirements only to find out that I was wanted only as a substitute
teacher at less than $18K per year.
I have submitted twelve applications for the
2001-02 school year and I cannot get an interview. This age and gender
discrimination is wide spread and flies in the face of the news media cry
of "teacher shortage".
