Heroes in American Education

The American Society for Ethics in Education wishes to acknowledge the work of the following individuals as champions for children and teachers in American schools. These individuals have endured extraordinary hardships for demanding ethical behavior.

Laura Brauner - A former Los Angeles Unified School District District teacher who helped bring down the notorious "Jailhouse Sallye" Gauthier - even though the Los Angeles Unified School District allowed "Jailhouse Sallye" to continue working as a principal at Arlington Heights Elementary School. It didn't matter to LAUSD that "Jailhouse Sallye" had:

bullet

led 11 parents into a classroom and berated a teacher in front of them,

bullet

restrained a special education student by putting her foot on the child's head,

bullet

slammed into seven cars, killing a man, then drove away,

bullet

been convicted of misdemeanor manslaughter,

bullet

drove nearly 70 teachers and staff out of the school, and

bullet

caused unknown additional harm to the poor children at Arlington Heights Elementary School.
