Benefits(?) of Membership in the
California Teachers Association

On their web site, CTA lists the following as their "top four" benefits of membership - in the Victor Elementary School District, these "benefits" are nonexistent.

"Member Rights" - (#1)

"One of CTA's prime objectives is to protect the rights of its members. CTA believes that education employees should be free from arbitrary and capricious decisions by their employers. When violations occur, employees must have available the resources to defend their rights through appropriate legal or administrative channels."

bulletFACT - NO ONE can remember the last time anyone filed a grievance against the Victor Elementary School District.
bullet FACT - CTA (and NEA) IGNORED their "duty" to protect the rights of its members in the Lomitas Elementary School OCR case. (CTA and NEA) did NOTHING regarding the  case.
bulletFACT - CTA/NEA Members in the High Desert Region were (and still are) denied access to "the resources to defend their rights through appropriate legal or administrative channels." Be sure to see how much help CTA provided when schools (including Lomitas Elementary School) were, using the CTA/NEA Service Unit Representative, Bill Ribblett's, own words  were "subjected to a Commando raid."
bulletFACT - Last year (1998-1999), approximately 30 teachers, out of just 300 within the Victor Elementary School District, were fired, "terminated," or asked to leave their jobs.
bulletFACT - Each year, between 10 and 30 teachers are fired, "terminated,' or asked to leave their jobs with the Victor Elementary School District.

"Legal Protection" - (#2)

"As a CTA/NEA member, you are automatically covered under the Educators Employment Liability Insurance Policy.

Up to $1,000,000 coverage for legal defense costs in civil suits (except civil rights cases) brought against you in the course of your employment.

Up to $250,000 coverage in civil rights cases.

Up to $35,000 reimbursement for attorney's fees and other legal costs for criminal proceedings if you are exonerated from the charges.

Up to $1,000 bail bond coverage

Up to $500 for personal property damages caused by an assault if as a result of your employment"

bulletFACT - CTA COMPLETELY IGNORES CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AGAINST ITS MEMBERS.
bullet FACT - CTA did NOTHING to assist approx. 300 classroom teacher when their classrooms were raided
bulletFACT - CTA did NOTHING when teachers at Lomitas Elementary School were harassed.
bulletFACT - CTA did NOTHING when Lomitas Elementary School Teachers were subjected to HORRIBLE work environments.
bulletFACT - CTA did NOTHING to protect the Civil Rights of the Children at Lomitas Elementary

"Job Protection" - (#3)

"CTA maintains a constant watch on the legislature and on individual school districts and campuses to fight any attempts to deprive school employees of due process rights. CTA provides publications and workshops to inform members how to safeguard their personnel records and to protect their jobs under the "tenure" laws."

bulletFACT - THIS IS UTTER NONSENSE! The people at the California Teacher's Association MUST be smoking something (or doing something else) - THIS IS EXACTLY WHY THIS SITE WAS CREATED!
bulletFACT - CTA does NOTHING to protect the rights of teachers in the Victor Elementary School District.

" Minority Rights" - (#4)

"CTA works with local chapters to maintain minority involvement programs. CTA assists members to fight ethnic, sex or age discrimination in their employment. CTA maintains a minority affairs committee which advises its governing bodies of any changes needed to protect minority rights."

bulletFACT - THIS IS A LIE!!!! CTA did NOTHING to assist teachers at Lomitas Elementary School to fight Discrimination and Sexual Harassment against them and their students!
